Purpose:
The Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian recognizes and promotes excellence in public library service by an individual librarian in a California public library. The winner of the CLA award may be nominated for ALA's "Allie Beth Martin Award" if appropriate.
Eligibility:
The Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian is given to a professional librarian (MLIS) who is a member of the California Library Association. The Recipient must have worked as a professional librarian in a California public library for at least three years. The award may be for lifetime achievement but should highlight accomplishments in the last three years. The Award shall not be given to current officers of the Public Library Section or to members of the Award Committee.
Number/Frequency:
The Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian shall be presented no more than once per year and to no more than one honoree. If there are no suitable nominees, no award will be given in that year.
Nomination/Application Process:
The deadline for nominations shall be consistent with the CLA awards and fellowship deadline of September 1st. Nominations/applications must follow the format outlined on the official application form.
Selection Criteria:
The Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian will be given annually to a member of the California Library Association who, in a public library setting, has demonstrated one or more of the following:
- Extraordinary range and depth of knowledge about books or other library materials and a distinguished ability to share that knowledge.
- A record of outstanding programming for children or adults (or both).
- A record of extensive community outreach.
- Recent (within the past 3 years) implementation of a new and creative service to the public.
Recent implementation of a new and creative method of delivery for a previously existing service. The Recipient of the Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian will be presented with a plaque at the CLA Annual Conference by the President of the Public Library Section.
