Policies
CLA depends upon its members to remain a vital and dynamic association. You are invited to become an active participant in the organization by participating in a section or round table, serving on a committee or taskforce, or holding office. Getting involved is easy-just let us know your interests.
The California Library Association elects officers and representatives to the Assembly. Committee chairs are appointed by the CLA President for a one-year term, and may be re-appointed. Committee members are appointed by the CLA President for one - three years terms, except the Legislative Committee, which is a four-year appointment.
Sections
A section is a large, broad based group made up of at least 150 CLA members. Sections are concerned with types of libraries, activities, library users, or geographical areas. Sections elect their leaders during the annual CLA election.
Round Tables
Round tables are smaller than sections (at least 20 CLA members) and are organized around specific interests. Round tables select their chairs annually during their meeting at the conference.
Committees
Most committees meet two or three times a year. Increasingly, committees transact their business utilizing technologies such as video-teleconferencing, email, conference calls and fax.
Task Forces
Task forces focus on more topical issues and are created as needed. Committees and task forces try to alternate meeting locations between north and south, or meet in subcommittees regionally. The association has a limited budget for travel and can reimburse 50 percent of travel until those funds are depleted.
As you consider volunteering for a committee or task force, please understand that your commitment to regular attendance and active participation in the work of the group is extremely important and is what will insure the success of the group in meeting its charge.
